Mississippi Economic Development News – Week of January 25, 2010

Mississippi claims its place at the Southeast’s booming aerospace table.  Move over, automotive industry. You’ve got company. The entire Southeast is home to a thriving aviation industry, and Mississippi is no exception.

Gov. Haley Barbour says Mississippi needs to continue focusing on job creation so the state can be ready to emerge from the national recession.

(Joe) Geddie, Director of the North Mississippi Industrial Development Association, cautioned guests that the current recession should not be used to slow or stop progress in developing and maintaining potential industrial sites or plans.

“Gerald Mills has been instrumental with working with MDA to gain the funding and create this unique future development enticement for Winston County,” said (Mayor Will) Hill.

During the organization’s monthly meeting, (Mitch) Stennett said more than $100 million worth of work has come to the county from 2009-2010.

In fact, the American Legislative Exchange Council ranked Mississippi 19th among the states best positioned for economic recovery.   “Government spending, especially aerospace and defense will grow in Mississippi,” (Phil) Hardwick said. “Also, energy can become a big opportunity. We are a huge energy-producing state.”

Area Development Partnership President Chad Newell only has been in his position for three weeks, but he already has a clear vision on what the organization should focus on this year.

The Mississippi Development Authority (MDA) held a public hearing in Laurel as a part of the agency’s preparation to submit its five-year plan to federal officials.

Twenty-five companies from across the state have been awarded federal funding totaling more than $5 million for energy-efficiency projects, in the name of job creation and retention. It may sound strange, but the premise behind the program is turn off a light, save a job.

Effective Monday, February 1, Tonia Williams, Economic Development Administration Representative for Mississippi, will assume the role of Area Director in the Philadelphia (PA) Regional Office (EDA).   Until further notice, Mr. Gilbert Patterson will serve as Economic Development Representative for the state of Mississippi.  Gil may be reached at 404-730-3032 or email at gpatterson@eda.doc.gov.
